Chapter 17

Violet

Turning over, I hit snooze and roll back to my stomach, burying my face in the pillow. I didn’t get home from the club until almost one o’clock. Four hours is not enough sleep. Squeezing my eyes shut, I pray to get more rest, even a few minutes. Wrapped in my blanket, the soft material against my skin, I drift off before my mind has other plans.

Nate was there.

Did he see the scene I had with Wes? When I told him he couldn’t dominate me, it was to protect my heart, needing that separation. I assumed that not letting him in on my plan to return was an act of kindness, but the stone in my stomach proves I was wrong.

The note.

Jumping out of bed, completely awake now as I pace the floor. “Fuck that guy. He went to the club after telling me he had to be at the job site early today!” Talking to myself is apparently my new pastime. I might have omitted my return to Top to Bottom, but Nate lied about his plans too.

Stopping in front of the window near my bed, I place my hands on the window frame and lean my forehead against the cool glass. When I exhale, my breath fogs up the glass slightly, my breath warmer than the cool morning air outside. I focus on the fog as it slowly dissipates, and the street below becomes visible again. Damn it. Maybe we’re even. Pushing away from the window, with what I hope is a clear perspective on my situation, I jump into action, getting ready for my day.

Grabbing my coffee and keys, I am about to walk out the door when I realize my phone is missing. A chime from my nightstand echoes throughout my small apartment like a beacon, telling me where it is. There are over ten texts from Poppy and Luke, all carrying the same message—where are you, is everything okay, what happened with Wes?

Knowing I sent a message to Luke before I left, I check it only to find my message didn’t go through. I open a group text to both of them, killing two birds with one stone.

Me: I’m home, everything is perfect, and the scene with Wes was good.
